What Are Dental Implants, And How Do They Work?

Dental implants are small, screw-shaped pieces of titanium. They are designed to function as artificial tooth roots. Each implant is surgically placed into the area where you’ve lost a tooth. Over time, the titanium implant bonds with your bone as it heals, which permanently locks it into place.

OThen, once the implant heals, it can be used to support an artificial tooth or multiple teeth. One implant can be used with a crown to replace one missing tooth, or multiple implants can be used to support a dental bridge or even a full set of implant-supported dentures.

Understanding The Benefits Of Dental Implants

Unbeatable stability

Compared to alternative treatments like dental bridges and dentures, dental implants have lots of unique benefits. First, they are extremely stable. Because they permanently integrate with your own bone, dental implants will never shift or move when you eat, chew, or speak.

Realistic results

Dental implants also look very realistic. Once you get implants, your new teeth will be made from porcelain ceramic materials. Dr. Rosen has years of experience with restorative dentistry and works closely with a local master ceramist to create natural, lifelike, and beautiful dental implant restorations including crowns, bridges, and implant-supported dentures.

Long lifespan

Dental implants can easily last 30 years if you take good care of your teeth. This means they can last much longer than dental bridges or partial dentures. Particularly for patients with certain oral conditions, like those predisposed to severe cavities, they can be a great alternative as implants cannot get cavities. While they may be a big investment, the long lifespan of dental implants means that they're worth every penny.

Easy care

Speaking of care, dental implants do not require much special care. Single-tooth implants, for example, can be treated just like natural teeth. Brush twice a day, floss once per day, and make sure you see Dr. Rosen for a checkup every six months. That’s all there is to it!

Protects oral health

Unlike bridges and dentures, dental implants are anchored directly into your natural jawbone. This means you’ll stimulate your jawbone when you bite and chew, preventing it from weakening after tooth loss. This prevents changes in your facial structure and appearance and keeps your jawbone healthy, too.

Common Types Of Dental Implant Restorations

  • Single-tooth implants – Single-tooth implants are the most common type of dental implants, and are ideal if you’re only missing one or several teeth. They consist of one dental implant that supports a false tooth (crown).
  • Implant-supported bridges – Implant-supported bridges are a great choice if you’ve lost several teeth that were next to each other. They use two dental implants to support a porcelain dental bridge and restore a row of three two dental implants to support a row of 3-5 missing teeth.
  • Implant-supported dentures – Implant-supported dentures use a set of 4-6 implants to support a full row of upper teeth, lower teeth, or both rows of teeth. They are typically removable. However, they offer superior stability, a more natural look and feel, and a longer lifespan compared to traditional dentures.
  • All-On-4 – Dr. Rosen specializes in All-On-4 at our office. All-On-4 is an implant technique that uses just four implants to support a full row of upper or lower teeth. All-On-4 implant-supported dentures are fixed in place permanently, so they're extremely stable and don’t have to be removed at night, or to brush and floss.

What To Expect From The Dental Implant Process

Implant consultation and planning

First, you’ll need to visit Dr. Molly Rosen for an implant consultation. We offer free dental implant consultations in Philadelphia. During your visit, Dr. Rosen will examine your mouth, take X-rays, discuss your oral health challenges and goals with you, and help you decide if an implant is right for you. Once you’re approved, she will begin planning your treatment right away.

Implant placement surgery

At your next visit, Dr. Rosen will begin by cleaning and numbing the treatment area. Next, she will create an opening in gum and jaw tissue where your missing tooth used to be. Dr. Rosen will place a dental implant in this area, then clean, sanitize, and stitch the site. This process will be repeated if you’re getting multiple implants.

Healing and recovery

Once you’re done with your implant surgery, Dr. Rosen will send you home with instructions on how to heal and recover from your procedure. You can usually get back to your routine within a day or two. It takes 2-3 weeks to heal from the initial surgery, but it will take 3-6 months for the implant to fully bond with your jaw bone.

Crafting your implant restoration

As you heal and recover from implant surgery, you will come in for visits with Dr. Rosen so that she can check your progress. At this time, she’ll also begin working with our partner dental lab to create your implant restoration, such as a dental crown for a single-tooth implant.

Abutment placement

The abutment is what connects your dental implant to your new tooth. If you did not get an abutment during your initial surgery, you will come in for a quick visit once your mouth is healed to get one. This is a quick procedure that only takes about one hour.

Final visit and finishing up

Once your mouth has fully healed and your crown is finished, you’ll come back to the office of Molly Rosen, DMD for one final visit. Dr. Rosen will double-check your crown to make sure it fits properly, then attach it to your implant permanently. Then, you’ll be sent home to enjoy your newly restored smile!
